Some people collect shells mainly because they are attracted to their graceful lines and most are not aware whether they are a rare species or not; however, serious collectors are aware that some of the rarest species are very small and uninteresting to look at. Shells are often used for trading purposes and the serious shell-collector will pay quite a sum for that “special shell.”

Many craftspersons have made the shell the focal point of their dimensional art forms. Their beauty has been an inspiration to many ceramicists over the years, utilising the form to hand-sculpt in clay and decorate with mother-of-pearl lustre.

Some people dive to the depths of the ocean to collect shells that fascinate; it is not suggested that you go to such lengths for you can purchase some really lovely shells from specialised stores.
Ideas are endless and it is a creative activity which can involve the whole family.
- An easy project for children is to cover a white-wood or plastic box/shape with a variety of shell shapes.
- Lamp bases can be produced by covering bottles with shells.
- A specialised shell, when cut, can be used for a serviette holder and two shells joined by a clasping shape can be used as a small coin holder.
- Jewellery is always something attractive for the ladies and by choosing just the right shells, attaching them to ear-ring and brooch findings (purchased from craft suppliers,) jewellery can be made.

The history of shell artistry dates back to the very early centuries and many beautiful pieces of antiquity can be found in museums around the world.
The mother-of-pearl lustre of some shells is often just below the surface of what could seem a dull and uninteresting specimen; using a soft abrasive to rub down the surface and the mother-of-pearl gleam will soon appear.
