Jenny Holzer Exhibitions in the U.S.Light Projection Artist Celebrated in Major Cities
Jenny Holzer, famed for her political messages and light projection works involving huge text, is holding a number of exhibits in the United States.
The American artist is considered one of the most significant and pioneering contemporary artists, both for her approach to language and for her use of nontraditional media and public settings for her work. Weaving in her interest in relaying social issues to the public, her work uses text as a graphic form of art. Five Buildings in ChicagoSix poems of Wislawa Szymborska will be projected on five buildings in Chicago, including the facade of the Museum of Contemporary Art, Lyric Opera Building, Tribune Tower and the Merchandise Mart. The installation continues until Nov. 2. Interior Projections in MassachusettsAt MASS MoCA, Jenny Holzer presents her first interior light projections in the United States. A huge, empty gallery is flooded with words and light as visitors plunk themselves down on huge white cushions on the floor. Also on view is a new series of paintings from declassified government documents, first shown, in part, at the 2007 Venice Biennale. Holzer's display of government documents, such as planning maps for the invasion of Iraq, reveal the bureaucratic administration of war through the cloud of paint and the weight of a looming installation. The exhibition ends on Nov. 16. Guggenheim in New YorkHolzer was commissioned by the Guggenheim Foundation to create an installation that would project text onto the facade of the newly renovated Guggenheim museum. Comprised of the artist's own political messages and translated poetry of Nobel prize-winning Polish poet Wislawa Szymborska, the installation takes place every Friday when the sun sets. The installation runs until December 31. (For more about the Guggenheim installation in New York: Poetry on Restored Guggenheim.) Liberties Under Fire in UtahHolzer is one of five artists exhibiting in the Salt Lake Art Center's Liberties Under Fire. The exhibition features works that depict or suggest pivotal civil liberties issues. Holzer's work is about secrecy, made of an internal U.S. military document Holzer acquired through the Freedom of Information Act. Holzer magnified the document and silkscreened it onto wood, leaves the viewer to puzzle out the story behind the words. The exhibition continues until January 31, 2009. Exhibition at Museum of Contemporary Art, ChicagoThe Museum of Contemporary Art (MCA) in Chicago is holding an exhibit of Holzer's works in partnership with the Fondation Beyeler in Basel, Switzerland. Titled Jenny Holzer: PROTECT PROTECT, this exhibition is Holzer’s largest and most comprehensive in the United States in over 15 years. After Chicago, it wil travel to other museums in the United States and Europe during 2009-10 where its components are reconfigured by the artist at each venue as the basis for a site-specific installation. The Chicago exhibition is scheduled to run until February 1, 2009.
